Make a Robot print!

Last week the children made Robot prints!

They were given a selection of different items to make prints from including:
sponges
combs
tubes
straws
doilies
string
rubber bands
selotape
polystyrene
scissors
fabric

Giant food sculptures!

Hi and welcome back to Art Club for 2012-2013!

We got off to flying start with making Giant Food Sculptures!

The Club got into 4 teams and chose food to make. They chose: Pizza, Cupcakes, Donuts and a Hamburger.

It was easy peasy just using newspaper and masking tape - the only challenge was: how big were they going to be!!!!!

After making their giant sculptures, they got to work painting them! Good job everyone! See you next week! :0)

Inside a Bee Colony Artwork

For the last 2 weeks the children have been busy making an artwork called 'Inside a Bee colony'!

For the first week they made a paper pulp mixture using newspaper, marble powder, water and pva glue. They looked at pictures of bees and made their raised, relief shapes from the paper pulp and glued them to a large sheet of ply.

When the bees had dried, the whole artwork was given a layer of white emulsion. The children made hexagonal templates and got to work drawing the honeycomb all over the board.

To fill the artwork with even more bees, the children each drew a 2D bee next to their 3D or 'relief' bee.

Then it was time to get painting! We decided on making lots of shades of oranges for the honeycomb and a mix of yellows, blacks and blues for the bees. The children worked brilliantly together, helping make sure every white space was filled by the end of the session.

I think you'll agree that the finished artwork is superb! Well done everybody!

Aboriginal inspired Dot Paintings

This week the children made aboriginal inspired dot paintings. We saw that the aborigines made artworks of things that were important to them; fires, campsites and kangaroos were just some of the reoccurring themes.
So I asked the children what was important to them and they made lots of suggestions; family, flowers, myself, pets and even mobile phones were some of the answers.

So the children drew out what was important to them on a sheet of A2 paper and then chose 4 or 5 colours to make their painting. Some of the children drew around their hand like in one of the examples, to represent themselves.

They made the dots using the rubber on the end of a pencil. To get a nice dot every time and equal spacing between the dots was a challenge - it required a lot of concentration!

3D Animal Relief Paintings

The children got busy on their first project
'3D Animal Relief Paintings'.

Firstly, the children chose a printout of an animal that they liked from a huge collection that I brought in.  Secondly, they shaped their animal in newspaper. This was tricky at first, but they soon got to grips with looking at the shapes of the animals and transferring them into shapes of newspaper. Finally they secured their shapes down onto their piece of cardboard with strips of masking tape. No glue required! I love this technique, its a really great way of getting raised 'relief' images quickly and with zero mess!

After making sure all the layers of masking tape were secure, the children started painting their animal. They used their printout as a reference to attain the desired colours.

Everyone had lots of fun and created beautiful artworks!

As always I only manage to get a few photos in whilst teaching so here are some of the finished pieces! Enjoy.
