What I love about Art Club - Group collage

For the last four weeks of term, the children made a fantastic group collage called
"What I love about Art Club". The project was so impressive because I have never known a group of 6-11 year olds to do anything as complicated as 'scaling up' - its something they usually learn in GCSE and A-Level. But for anyone who knows me, they know I like to push the boundries of whats possible! ;0)

Here's how they did it!

First of all they designed their own posters - here are just a few of them:

Then I chose parts of everyone's drawings and made it into a collective design. The theme became "Art Club is out of this World" and featured planet Earth with some of the childrens favourite projects on the land masses:

Then we divided the traced design into 15 sections, one for each child in the group.

Then as each child 'scaled up' their tiny 1/15th of an A3 onto one whole A3, they began to fit the artwork together as a whole. I was really impressed with the way they joined up each others drawings and were excited to make it look the best they could!

Next stage was to mark out which colours went where and then they were ready to collage!

And here's the final result = amazing! Well done everyone!

Visionary Self Portraits

This week the children made Visionary Self Portraits. 

They did this using photographs of themselves with wax crayons and collage. They drew over the photographs with the wax crayons and added collaged visions of what they were thinking about, what they enjoyed or what they would like to be when they grow up.

Inventive Houses

This week the children were given an architecture project in collage form. They looked at various examples of unusual house based on organic shapes. The above houses were based on the Shell and the Mushroom respectively - stunning!

So I gave the children different objects to choose from; a crystal, some rocks, driftwood, mushrooms, brocolli, a pineapple and flowers. They were to design the exterior of a house based on the object they chose.

And here we have a series of creative dwellings based on a bunch of flowers:

A really great project to get the children to look at things differently. See you next week! x

Mandala Group Project

Ah yes! A new month and time for a group project! This time it was 'Make a Mandala'. We laid out sheets of newspaper to form the largest square possible - around 4msqu - and secured with clear tape. Then we marked a large circle using string and a pen to outline the edge of the Mandala.

All the children got into 4 groups. There was a 'circles' group, a 'squares' group, a 'rectangle' group and a 'pointed shapes' group. A leader from each group was appointed and each leader discussed how best to create the mandala using the materials given.

The materials provided were lots of pre cut circles, postitnotes for squares, label stickers for rectangles and disount labels for pointed shapes. There was also a bag of coloured card so that should any of the resources run out, we could make templates and create more shapes.

The children quickly realised that that in order to get every child involved, jobs had to be allocated. Some worked on the centre while others worked on the outside edge.

Soon a really gorgeous heart shaped emerged and all the other patterns evolved around the central heart shape.

Everyone was having a great time!
