Cardboard Castles

Last week the Children made Cardboard Castles!

Each child was given a sheet or two of cardboard, 5 or 6 cardboard rolls (huge thanks to my mum for saving them for us!), a roll of selotape, 5 or 6 paper cups, coloured card and paper, some string, a few wooden kebab sticks, and some oil pastels.

The children loved making their castles, each one had unique characteristics. Some had flags, some had ladders, some had canons, some had drawbridges and others had gardens!

Inventive Houses

This week the children were given an architecture project in collage form. They looked at various examples of unusual house based on organic shapes. The above houses were based on the Shell and the Mushroom respectively - stunning!

So I gave the children different objects to choose from; a crystal, some rocks, driftwood, mushrooms, brocolli, a pineapple and flowers. They were to design the exterior of a house based on the object they chose.

Junk Modelling Theme Park

For the first (rainy!) week back of Summer Term, the children got busy designing and making their own Theme Park Ride! I had been saving up my plastic pots and tubs for months and now we could finally use them.

The children had a choice of up to 6 plastic items, a roll of electrical tape, clear solotape, cardboard and kebab sticks. They were all given a wooden man to make sure that their rides were all a similar size - all 'to scale'.

They made some fantastic rides. The photo above was of a spinning ride - that actually spun! Brilliant.

The above photo shows a 'Flume' type ride which the little wooden man provided came sliding down and into the pot below!

The above photo shows a multi-ride - a swing, a tunnel and huts to climb into - all in one!

And below are two very fabulous 'Waltzer' type rides - looking good!

 

The final Theme Park assembled with just some of the finished rides - you can see a pirate ship in the back right - and the wooden man just off centre left. Brilliant work everyone. Well done!

Biscuit Buildings!

To give the children a huge treat before half term, I bought hundreds of biscuits and sweets, for them to make Biscuit Buildings! Needless to say they were very excited and worked hard on their buildings right to the very last minute of the session!

They were given a sheet of cardboard and foil to wrap round it as a base.

They were given a whole pack of custard creams and garibaldis each! As well as a handful of bourbons, nice biscuits and chocolate wafers. A couple of children were absent so there were even more biscuits to go round!

They used royal icing as 'cement' to stick the biscuit 'bricks' together and form their building. The children looked at real bricks to see the special way in which to build their structure. They soon realised that their buildings needed internal support to strengthen them. More biscuits please!

For the last half an hour, the children were given a bowl of sweets each! They had smarties, laces, love hearts and dolly mixtures. Wow! Time to add the details to their brilliant structures.
