For the last 2 weeks the children at Art Club made Shadow Puppets!
For the first week they got into groups and decided on what characters to make and how they could interact in a short 2 minute play.
Then they got down to work! Designing their characters and cutting them out of black card. Then they attached all the joints together with brass fasteners and attached kebab sticks to the back to animate them.
In the second week the children made slides using coloured lighting filters and paint. Then each group came into the film room to perform each of their plays.
It was so much fun! Here are the results in the finished films!
For the last four weeks of term, the children made a fantastic group collage called "What I love about Art Club". The project was so impressive because I have never known a group of 6-11 year olds to do anything as complicated as 'scaling up' - its something they usually learn in GCSE and A-Level. But for anyone who knows me, they know I like to push the boundries of whats possible! ;0)
Here's how they did it!
First of all they designed their own posters - here are just a few of them:
Then I chose parts of everyone's drawings and made it into a collective design. The theme became "Art Club is out of this World" and featured planet Earth with some of the childrens favourite projects on the land masses:
Then we divided the traced design into 15 sections, one for each child in the group.
Then as each child 'scaled up' their tiny 1/15th of an A3 onto one whole A3, they began to fit the artwork together as a whole. I was really impressed with the way they joined up each others drawings and were excited to make it look the best they could!
Next stage was to mark out which colours went where and then they were ready to collage!
And here's the final result = amazing! Well done everyone!
On July 8th we made a Giant Bird with the public at The Kilburn Festival!
We made a Kingfisher because Kingfishers are on of the only birds who have species found across the planet! We thought this fitted nicely into the Festivals theme of Community, Inclusivity and Diversity.
So we made an inner armature from wood and then covered it with wiremesh and newspaper.
Then we covered the whole thing in Plaster and decorated it with hundreds of fabric squares.
The Festival also had an Olympics theme, so the colours we chose were the same colours of the Olympic rings!

We had such a great day! Thanks to everyone who took part.
The Mayor of Camden invited us to display the finished piece in the local Town Hall!

To celebrate May Day and The Crouch End Festival 2012, Leona and one of her assistants from Artist's Resource went to Stationers Park, N8, to make a life size Sculpture of a sheep! But not just any sheep - a psychedelic one!

Leona and Miriam started off in Hornsey Vale Community Centre, making the main structure of the sheep. We used wiremesh, wire and newspaper to construct the sheeps body, head, legs, tail and decorative swirls on it's back to represent the wooly coat.
When the wire stage was complete, we took the sculpture outside to start on the plaster stage with the public. Anyone could join in! It was so much fun meeting local parents and children who all helped cover the sheep in plaster.
When the plaster had dried, we went onto the next stage - covering it with 100's of squares of fabric! We had so many gorgeous fabrics to choose from! Everyone had lots of fun gluing their chosen fabric squares onto the sheep sculpture.
When the sculpture was complete, we donated the finished piece to Hornsey Vale Community Centre, N8 so that everyone who visits this fabulous place can see and enjoy all our hard work.
